Educator McConnell named artist of month
Retired educator and potter Sally McConnell is the River Region Art Association’s May Artist of the Month.
McConnell’s pottery is on display at the association’s gallery, 1835 N. Magnolia Ave., Gonzales, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday until June 1.
A Columbus, Ohio, native, McConnell lived in Germany and England before moving to Louisiana. She earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from LSU and taught science for 25 years.
Inspired by nature, McConnell enjoys gardening and photography.
McConnell, who studied art at Ohio State University before becoming a teacher, got back into art after friend Joan Beselman asked her to join her in a pottery class. What started out as a hobby has turned into a full-time passion, as she opened the Glazed and Confused Studio at her home.
McConnell works with stoneware clay and calls the hand-building method of pottery her favorite. Many of her pieces are donated to local churches and schools in memory of Beselman, who died in 2002. She is a member of the Retired Teacher’s Association, River Region Art Association, and the Potter’s Council.
In addition to the River Region Art Gallery in Gonzales, she has her art displayed at the LSU Museum of Art gift shop in Baton Rouge, the Funky Palette in Circa 1857, the Merging of the Arts in Denham Springs and Louisiana Pottery in Sorrento.
