GONZALES — Donaldsonville High School senior Charles Smith’s mentor and favorite teacher, Ricky Bolotte, couldn’t believe his former student wanted to follow in his footsteps.

The two talked about Smith’s plans to become a high school science teacher and coach during Eatel Corp.’s second Top Scholars banquet.

Bolotte, who taught Smith’s 10th-grade biology class, described Smith as “a very hard working, smart young man who was  always on the ball.”

Bolotte, who is a teacher and football coach at Ascension Catholic High School, had kind words to say about Smith and his two siblings, whom he also taught during his 33-year teaching career.

“All the Smith children were great students,” Bolotte said.

Smith, the son of Theresa and Bill Smith, was among the eight high school seniors honored during the banquet.

Each senior was asked to invite a teacher who inspired them. That choice was easy for Smith, who said Bolotte’s teaching method were “truly inspiring to me.”

Eatel spokesman Trae Russell said the event is an opportunity to honor the top students in the parish and highlight the accomplishments of local educators.

Students from the Dutchtown High School digital media class produced a video of each students talking about the teachers selected to attend the banquet.

Students received a $250 gift certificate to Target; teachers received a $50 gift card.

Also honored during the banquet were Talasha Aubert, Donaldsonville High, and teacher Julia Jordan; Kason Michael Diez, Dutchtown High, and teacher Burt Rachal; Rochelle Ann Wooden, Dutchtown High, and teacher Jackie Holdridge;     Claire Bresowar, East Ascension High, and band director Patti Roussel;  Chase Mayers, East Ascension High, and teacher Katy Strickland; Hayley Haydel, St. Amant High, and teacher Allison Sampson; and Erica Geromini, St. Amant High, and teacher Darryl Babin.
