The staff, participants and friends of Community Opportunities of East Ascension kicked off Disability Awareness Family Fun Day on Saturday with a walk, run and wheelchair roll event down Irma Boulevard.

The event, in connection with Disability Awareness Month, allowed more than 50 people with and without disabilities to enjoy the beautiful day, COEA Board President Anita Cann said.

After the event, more than 500 people took part in games, enjoyed the food and danced to the music of Raising Cane.

“This day is all about raising the awareness of our programs and highlighting the abilities of those who use our services,” Cann said.

Winners of the roll division were Brittany Dupuis and Beverly Dupuis; and the walk race was won by Jay Crawford, Donald Brown and Kristina Aliers. Tendrick Cooper, Kim Becnel and Chelsea Becnel won the run.

Many of the people who use the services offered at COEA collected donations to support the event, Cann added.

Dupuis won a trophy for collecting the most in donations, with Brown winning second and Debbie Vanlndingham in third place. Pamela Duplush, George Powers, Becky Bourg, Robin Ducote, Laura Amos and Jay Crawford were honored for their fundraising support.

Cann thanked sponsors BASF, UCB Bank and Healing Place Church “for making this day such a success.”

COEA is dedicated to people and their families who have special needs, Cann said. The agency offers an adult day training program, supported employment and living programs and personal care, and respite services.

The agency held a ground-breaking ceremony Tuesday on an expansion of its building on South East Ascension Complex Boulevard in Gonzales.

Cann said the addition will allow the agency to help more people.
