LAFAYETTE — The next step in getting the school district’s newest high school off the ground will be finding students to fill its classrooms.

The new high school, which will focus on career and technical education, passed its final hurdle during Wednesday’s School Board meeting and now has a home — though it’s temporary.

The school will open in August on the campus of the Acadiana Technical College in Lafayette. The college serves as a temporary site while district staff work out negotiations to buy a building for the new high school.

There are spots for 150 incoming freshmen.

Career and technical teachers will soon visit eighth-grade classrooms to share more information about the new high school, said Burnell LeJeune, director of career and technical education.

“One of the big things is going to be the marketing and recruitment,” LeJeune said.

The new school will be a schools of choice program for the district. Students will have to apply for the program with students selected via a computerized lottery system, if there are too many applicants.

That application process won’t begin until details of the school are finalized, said Angie Simoneaux, district marketing and student recruitment coordinator.

LeJeune said he hopes to have teachers in place by the summer because they’ll have to be trained in project-based learning, which is at the heart of the school’s mission.

The school’s hours will be from noon to 6:30 p.m. to accommodate the technical college.

“Our campus is really at a peak of attendance from 8 to 12,” said Phyllis Dupuis, regional director of the Acadiana Technical College.

The same schedule is used in the school district’s Early College Academy, which is a partnership with South Louisiana Community College.

The two college campuses are adjacent to each other. Currently, ECA students in need of transportation to SLCC ride the city bus.
