Iberia Parish Council names Squires airport commissioner
NEW IBERIA — The Iberia Parish Council on Wednesday selected helicopter company owner Ken Squires to serve on the parish’s airport authority.
Squires received eight of the council’s 14 votes. Another contender, Bill Miller, received six votes. A third candidate, Bill Waldrep, received no votes.
This was Squires’ third attempt to be appointed to the Iberia Parish Airport Authority. Squires owns Penn-Tex Helicopters Inc.
Miller is a pilot, and Waldrep is a former oilfield executive.
The selection comes in the wake of airport authority chairman Ron Alleman’s decision last month to resign.
The parish council also discussed — but tabled until the next meeting — a proposal to reduce its regular monthly meetings from three to two, and add committee meetings at the beginning of each month.
Council member Lloyd Brown, who made the proposal, said he has been coming to meetings to find he knows nothing of the issues being discussed.
Council member Bernard Broussard said the meeting schedule was switched to three meetings a month because the committee meeting format was not adequate.
He said committee discussions end up being rehashed at the regular meetings.
Council member John Berard, who agreed with Brown’s proposal, noted the time Broussard brought up a plan to renovate the courthouse and potentially move the parish government office off-site.
Berard said he knew nothing about the matter until it was brought before the council.
Broussard said he had developed his own plan on his own time with the input of parish government entities because nothing was being done.
