Evangeline workers to get bonus Nov. 20
VILLE PLATTE — Actively employed Evangeline Parish school workers can expect a little something extra in their Nov. 20 paychecks, according to School Board Business Manager Amy Lafleur.
Lafleur announced that thanks to excess sales tax collections, full-time degreed employees will receive a $3,080 bonus while full-time support employees will receive a $1,386 bonus.
The board also called a special executive session meeting for 6 p.m. Tuesday with their special desegregation attorney, Bob Hammonds.
Superintendent Toni Hamlin said Hammonds needs to meet with the board behind closed doors to report on where the school district stands in on-going negotiations with the U.S. Justice Department.
Hamlin says she has been having conference calls with Justice Department personnel about Ville Platte High School. The board is seeking partial unitary status with the federal court. She expects some public statement will be made after the closed door session is concluded. The School Board must respond to the federal court by Nov. 13.
In another matter, the superintendent said she expects additional cuts by the state in 2010.
The school district had to absorb $1.2 million in lost revenue this year between mandated costs shifted to the local school district and cuts to the minimum foundation formula. Hamlin is expecting an additional $1.3 million in state cuts next year.
“We will have to stay focused and stay financially responsible in the new year,” Hamlin said.
In other business the board:
- Voted to have only one meeting in December and January. The meeting dates are set for Dec. 9 and Jan. 13.
- Named Sally Moreaux as principal at Ville Platte Elementary School.
- Appointed David Rivera as principal at Evangeline Central School.
- Appointed Charles Johnson as assistant principal at Evangeline Central School.
