NEW IBERIA — Employees of Iberia Parish schools will have to endure a slight cut in this year’s supplemental pay and deferred payment.

A poor return on sales taxes has forced a $200 cut in certified teachers’ deferred payment, and $133 for non-certified teachers.

The board has had to tap into its $6 million reserve for $191,424 for the June 15 deferred payment, and will need to scoop out an additional $456,458 for the Nov. 20 deferred payment.

“We are into the reserve. That’s what we have a reserve for, to use it when times erode. That time is now,” Director of Business Carl LeBlanc explained. “If everything works out, we can go another 5‰ years deducting $456,000.”

The board may be able to generate a little extra funding from the possible sale of four of their properties that are no longer being used.

The board approved Superintendent Dale Henderson’s request to contract for the appraisal of the Special Education/Maintenance Department Facility, Canal Street Elementary, Peebles Elementary property and the Lee Street facility.

Henderson explained that the cost of appraisal will probably be between $12,000-$15,000, and should be completed in five to six weeks. Any money raised from the sales of the properties will go into the general fund.

Iberia Parish teacher Stephanie Judice will now have a bit more personal funding, thanks to being awarded $25,000 as part of the Milken Educator Award. Judice teaches Fine Arts Survey and English at New Iberia High School and Westgate High School.

“She was completely taken aback,” Henderson said of Judice receiving the prestigious recognition. “She is a very, very deserving recipient.”
