ST. MARTINVILLE — The St. Martin Parish Council approved a March 27 election for renewal of the Teche-Vermilion Fresh Water District’s special tax.

If passed, the 1.5 mill renewal would continue to contribute annually about $3.6 million across Iberia, Vermilion, Lafayette and St. Martin parishes — the T-V Fresh Water District.

Its executive director, Donald Sagrera, thanked the council for allowing the election for the tax first put in place in 1970 and renewed every 10 years since.

“This is simply a renewal of the original millage,” Sagrera said, explaining the organization was founded following the Louisiana flood of 1927.

Flood protection levees were built along the Atchafalaya River, greatly reducing the flow of water to the Bayou Teche through Iberia and St. Martin parishes and the Vermilion River through Vermilion and Lafayette.

“This caused very low flows of water through those tributaries,” Sagrera said. “This caused them to become very polluted because of lack of water, and this was corrected by the fresh water district.”

He explained water was returned to the Teche and Vermilion through a series of pump stations, canals, natural waterways and locks constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the fresh water district.
