St. Mary council tackles alcohol abuse
FRANKLIN — The St. Mary Parish Council voted Wednesday to expand the agenda to accept $563,905 in Department of Health and Hospitals funds to implement a strategic plan to address alcohol abuse in the parish.
The action was taken at the request of parish Chief Administrative Officer Bo LaGrange, who said the money would be used to implement a Strategic Prevention Framework plan already formulated by the parish to address the consumption and consequences of alcohol abuse in the age range of 12 to 29 years.
“We were one of 12 parishes chosen for the program,” LaGrange said.
“The money will be used to implement our strategic plan through education, events, (awareness) campaigns and law enforcement checkpoints.”
The parish council also voted to complete an application to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries by Nov. 5 to acquire $400,000 to improve fisheries in the parish.
LaGrange said the money could be used for construction and improvement to public and private projects related to fisheries.
In other business, the council approved a new AT&T cell tower on Freetown Road in Franklin that will improve cellular coverage in the area.
Carey “Woody” Krog, company project manager, said the tower would be built on farm land and be well away from any dwellings and public places in the area and could not fall onto La. 83 in the event of severe weather.
“The tower will provide much better service to customers between Baldwin and Weeks Island along Highway 83,” he said.
Krog said towers of this type usually cost about $130,000 and the company plans to have the tower up and running by the end of the year.
