Louisiana State Police seized about $1.5 million in marijuana during a traffic stop Wednesday on Interstate 10 in St. Martin Parish.
According to a news release, a trooper stopped a 1998 Freightliner tractor truck for a Motor Carrier Safety Inspection and allegedly discovered 114 bundles of marijuana mixed in with the produce.
The driver, identified as Floriberto Calderon, of Burbank, Ill., was delivering a shipment of limes and pineapples from McAllen, Texas, to North Carolina.
The marijuana had a combined weight of about 1,455 pounds and had a street value of about $1,455,180.
Police arrested Calderon and booked him in the St Martin Parish Jail on a charge of possession with intent to distribute marijuana.
New Iberia man held as robbery suspect
NEW IBERIA — A 23-year-old New Iberia man was arrested Sunday on armed robbery charges after he allegedly robbed a convenience store at gunpoint.
Iberia Parish Sheriff’s deputies arrested Jermaine Alexander on charges of armed robbery, resisting arrest by flight and outstanding warrants for failure to appear in court, according to a news release.
Alexander was arrested after he allegedly was seen fleeing the Pop-N-Fuel store in the 200 block of Center Street.
Deputies chased the man through the downtown area on foot and eventually tracked him down.
Deputies recovered alcohol, cigarettes and more than $400 taken during the robbery.
Police arrest man wanted in Texas
LAFAYETTE — A Lafayette police officer arrested a 32-year-old Lafayette man wanted in Texas for a felony burglary.
The officer was traveling on West Willow Street at 12:21 a.m. Monday when he checked the license plate on a vehicle traveling the same direction, according to a news release.
The officer then learned that the driver of the vehicle was wanted by authorities in Arlington, Texas.
