LAFAYETTE — The newly created vice president of enrollment management position at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette has been filled in the interim by DeWayne Bowie, the university’s registrar.

The position is part of organizational changes made at the  request of the university’s new president, Joe Savoie, who joined ULL in July.

Bowie has served as the university’s registrar for eight years and will continue to serve in the role while Savoie’s reorganization plan is finalized.

The reorganization created other new positions and eliminated others, including the vice president of information technology. A chief information officer position was created to oversee information technology at the university.

The enrollment management division is expected to coordinate efforts to improve student recruitment, retention and graduation rates. In the role, Bowie supervises the following areas: financial aid, undergraduate admissions, the registrar’s office, new student orientation, enrollment services, veteran’s affairs and the scholarship office.

“DeWayne’s experience and leadership will help the university improve student recruitment and increase student success and graduation rates,” Savoie said in Friday. “He’s been very committed to the university and he understands what needs to be done to achieve our goals in that area.”

In 2006, Bowie received a doctorate in educational leadership in research from LSU. He received both his bachelor’s degree in computer science in 1988 and master’s in business administration degree in 2000 from ULL.

A national search is required for vice president positions, according to University of Louisiana System policy.

Bowie is the third interim vice president appointed by Savoie.

But the university has four sitting interim vice presidents.

Ed Pratt, dean of students, was appointed interim vice president of student affairs since the announced retirement of former first gentleman, Raymond Blanco, in August.

Savoie’s transition coordinator and former Gov. Kathleen Blanco’s commissioner of administration Jerry Luke LeBlanc was appointed interim vice president of finance and administration in late June. The position had been vacant prior to Savoie’s arrival in July.

In April, former ULL President Ray Authement appointed Ken Ardoin interim vice president of advancement.
