Preparations for storm hit stride in Acadiana
LAFAYETTE — Hurricane Gustav still is days away from making landfall, but officials in Acadiana are not wasting any time in making preparations for the storm.
Public schools in Lafayette, Acadia, Iberia, St. Martin, St. Mary and Vermilion parishes will be closed Tuesday. The University of Louisiana at Lafayette will be closed on Tuesday
Schools in Jefferson Davis Parish will be closed Tuesday and Wednesday.
No decisions had been made regarding St. Landry Parish schools as of Friday afternoon.
In Lafayette, City-Parish President Joey Durel issued a news release urging citizens to begin planning.
“While it is still questionable as to where it will hit, the time has come for us to begin planning for what currently looks like an event that will have a significant impact on our area,” Durel said.
Tim Creswell, assistant homeland security and emergency preparedness director for Vermilion Parish, tried to maintain a level-headed approach to Gustav on Friday.
Vermilion Parish called for a voluntary evacuation but has not put anything else into effect.
The parish also is offering sandbags at Police Jury barns throughout the parish.
James Anderson, director of Iberia Parish Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, said his office continues to monitor the situation and is expected to call for a voluntary evacuation today.
He said as residents call into the office, his staff has encouraged them to leave, sooner rather than later.
