Class schedules to stay despite state pupil plan

LAFAYETTE — The Lafayette Parish School Board voted Wednesday night to grandfather in parish high schools’ current schedules for the 2008-09 year rather than force the schools to comply with a new pupil progression plan that would allow all seniors, excluding athletes, to take only those courses needed to graduate.

The changes would have brought the system’s Pupil Progression Plan in line with changes to the state Department of Education High School Redesign graduation requirements.

Under those requirements, incoming freshmen must earn 24 credits to graduate from high school rather than 23 credits.

Under these guidelines, seniors only take what classes are needed to graduate while athletes will have to take three classes because of Louisiana High School Athletic Association requirements.

Some expressed worry that implementing the plan would require a mass exodus from classes students had previously scheduled.

Others worried it could lead to seniors having too much idle time on their hands.

The board voted that all future discussions regarding pupil progression plans will occur in February so as to allow board members time to review them.

The board also voted to allow board President Carl Lacombe to enter into negotiations with the superintendent over his contract, which is set to expire in December.

Lacombe said he expected to bring something back at the next School Board meeting.

Lacombe said the board, by law, can offer a new contract of no longer than four years so as not to encumber the next School Board.

In other board news, Clerk of Court Louis Perret swore in Mark Allen Babineaux, board member for District 1.
