School bus suit might be dropped

LAFAYETTE — A legal dispute over whether the Lafayette Parish School Board provides adequate bus service for gifted and talented students appears to have resulted from a Web site mix up.

The family of a student who filed a lawsuit against the School Board last week over the issue has tentatively agreed to drop the case if acceptable bus service is provided when school starts Friday, said the family’s attorney, Randal P. McCann.

McCann filed the lawsuit on behalf of Jimmie Johnson, whose daughter will be a freshman in Lafayette High School’s Gifted and Talented Program this year.

The family sued to block bus route changes that they believed had placed their daughter’s morning pickup 2 miles  from her Carencro home and her afternoon dropoff 4 miles away.

McCann and School Superintendent Burnell Lemoine said Tuesday that the information about the bus service for the student, which came from the School Board’s Web site, was not correct.

The School Board will pick up and drop off the student in her neighborhood, he said.

Lemoine said not all of the information on bus routes for special education and gifted students is up-to-date on the site and parents should call to confirm.

McCann said his clients had attempted to get clarification before filing a lawsuit “but didn’t want to wait until the last minute.”

Public schools start Friday in Lafayette Parish.

McCann stated in a letter to the judge in the case that if acceptable bus transportation for his client’s daughter is provided Friday, he will file a motion to dismiss the suit Monday.
