The Acadia Parish School Board unanimously adopted a four-year, 25-mill property tax rate Monday night that is expected to generate about $600,000 annually, according to the district’s business director.

Business Director Mike Leonards said the millage is the same the parish collected over the last four years. Leonards said the property tax is one of the major parishwide revenue sources for the district.

Leonards said the board did not have a public hearing in Crowley on Monday because the proposed millage was advertised 30 days before the start of the meeting.

The school system’s adopted budget for the fiscal year that began July 1 indicates Acadia is expected to collect about $3.81 million from the tax millage, while a separate parishwide sales tax will generate $7.34 million.

Acadia is expected to receive about $13.66 million in total local revenues, which also includes interest on investments, mineral royalties and leased agricultural and timber property, the budget indicates.

The district expects to collect more money since the reappraised values on taxable property has generally increased in Acadia, said Leonards.

Chief Deputy Assessor Mike Goss said Tuesday that he is unsure how much the overall property values have increased in the parish.

“We won’t have those exact numbers until later in the year, but the values did appreciate in certain (geographic) areas,” said Goss.

Goss said the reappraised property values were calculated based on sales dating back to January 2007.

Leonards said there was no dispute among the board about setting the millage rates.

“We treated the issue as an inflationary measure. It is costing (the district) more to do business,” he said.
