VILLE PLATTE — The Evangeline Parish Police Jury was notified during a special meeting Tuesday that a Registrar of Voters Office employee has filed a discrimination lawsuit against the parish over appointment of someone else as registrar.

Police Jury President Bob Manuel said the lawsuit was filed by Phyllis Green, a registrar’s office employee for more than 30 years.

Green is alleging in her suit the appointment of Lucas Buller by the Police Jury in April 2007 was based on race, gender and age discrimination.

Buller is a white male under age 40; Green is a black female over 40.

Green’s attorney is Daniel Broussard Jr. of Alexandria.

Green is asking for a trial by jury.

Manuel said the jury followed all of the guidelines in choosing a new registrar. He said the position is considered an administrative one and Buller had the necessary administrative experience that Green lacked.

The jury approved the recommendation of its legal adviser, District Attorney Brent Coreil, to appoint attorney Joel Babineaux of Lafayette as the jury’s counsel in this lawsuit.

Coreil said the practice of law in discrimination lawsuits is highly specialized and he recommended Babineaux, who has the experience to represent the jury.
