William Jenkins spent 19 years at LSU — as dean of the veterinary school, provost, chancellor and finally president of the LSU System. A year ago he announced he was stepping down, and recently worked his final day as system president.

1937: Born Jan. 29, 1937, in Johannesburg, South Africa.
1958: Graduates from South Africa’s University of Pretoria with veterinary degree, goes to work in veterinary practice
1970: Earns doctorate from University of Missouri at Columbia
1971: Returns to South Africa to teach at University of Pretoria
1978: Takes faculty position at Texas A&M University
1988: Hired as dean of LSU School of Veterinary Medicine
1993: Named LSU provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs
1996: Appointed chancellor of LSU’s flagship campus
