BR man gets 60-year sentence

  • Published: Feb 2, 2010 - UPDATED: 11:28 a.m.

A Baton Rouge man was sentenced to 60 years in prison after pleading guilty this morning to manslaughter and attempted second-degree murder in the shooting death of his ex-fiancee and wounding of one of her neighbors in 2008.

Frederick Dominique Reed Jr., 39, was accused of killing 31-year-old Mia Reid less than two weeks after she sought a restraining order against him.

Reed’s trial on second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder charges began last week and was scheduled to resume this morning when Reed entered his guilty pleas.

State District Judge Tony Marabella sentenced Reed to the maximum 40 years on the manslaughter charge and 20 years on the attempted murder charge and ordered the terms to run consecutively.

Reed’s attorneys had argued to the jury that Reed was involuntarily intoxicated when he  killed his ex-fiancee in August 2008 at the apartment at the Ashley Oak complex in Scotlandville.

The defense claimed Reed was not criminally responsible for the alleged crimes because he had a violent reaction to the prescribed anti-depressant Lexapro.
