Police and Fire Briefs for Dec. 20, 2009
Sheriff’s deputies found a 12-year-old girl Saturday whose family had reported her missing the day before.
Aliyah Steward was found at 12:10 p.m. in the 6000 block of North Shore Drive near Woodlake Drive and Tiger Bend Road, said Casey Rayborn Hicks, a Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman. The girl was not injured and was in good health.
Deputies found Aliyah after getting a tip from someone who had received an automated phone message the Sheriff’s Office sent out about the girl late Friday and Saturday morning, Hicks said.
Aliyah’s family reported her missing at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Hicks said. At the time of their call, the last time Aliyah had been seen was at 12:15 p.m. when she got off her school bus at the intersection of Woodlake Drive and Lost Oak Drive.
After canvassing the area, interviewing people who knew the girl and talking with other law enforcement agencies, the Sheriff’s Office sent a phone message out to people within a 2-mile radius from where Aliyah was last seen, Hicks said.
Deputies decided to send another message out parishwide Saturday morning when their overnight efforts to find Aliyah were not successful, Hicks said. The girl was found hours later.
Detectives do not suspect foul play in the girl’s disappearance but are investigating why she was missing.
