LAFAYETTE — Police said two people were killed in a crash on Ambassador Caffery Parkway early Friday morning.

Andrew Garner, 19, of Lafayette, and Trissy Raelee Hargrave, 24, of Kaplan, both died in the crash. A 20-year-old woman from St. Martinville remains in critical condition, police said.

The incident began about 2:30 a.m. when officers responded to a disturbance at the Shop Rite, located at the 4000 block of West Congress Street. The clerk told 911 operators that three people appeared intoxicated and were knocking on the windows to be let in at the store,  a news release said. But they left before an officer arrived.

Cpl. Paul Mouton, spokesman for the department, said that the officer spotted the vehicle while he was completing his investigation.

The officer attempted to investigate, but the vehicle entered onto a private lot and then accelerated north on Ambassador Caffery Parkway.

According to the release, the officer lost sight of the vehicle but later drove upon a crash in the 1500 block of Ambassador Caffery Parkway.

A preliminary investigation indicated that Andrew Garner was northbound in a black Infiniti, the suspected vehicle, when he struck a gray Honda Accord driven by Hargrave traveling southbound. The vehicles burst into flames, the release said.

Hargrave was pronounced dead at the scene. The 20-year-old passenger in her vehicle was transported to an area hospital and is listed in critical condition,  the release said.

Mouton said there initially were three people inside of Garner’s vehicle but the officer observed only one person when it passed before him.

The crash remains under investigation.
