From Louisiana State Police:

The driver of the 2000 GMC Safari Minivan, Mona Hines, 38, was killed in the crash.

Hines was restrained when the crash occurred, but was partially ejected from the vehicle and pronounced deceased on the scene by the Ascension Parish Coroner’s Office.

Four of the children, who were unrestrained in the back seats of the vehicle, Ricky Hines, Jr., 2, Lachante Floyd, 12, Edward Barnes, 14, and Ashley Hines, 14, were also pronounced deceased at the scene.

The other adult in the vehicle, Stacey Hines, 28, was properly restrained when the crash occurred and is currently in stable condition at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital in Baton Rouge.

Seven of the children who survived the crash remain in critical condition and two sustained moderate injuries, but are considered stable.

The ages of the surviving children range from less than one year old to 14 years old.

All occupants of the vehicle are believed to be from the Harvey area.

11/28/09: PRAIRIEVILLE — A minivan carrying 15 people went out of control and rolled Saturday on Interstate 10, colliding with a delivery truck before leaving five occupants dead and 10 others critically injured, State Police reported.

The wreck happened just before noon when the minivan carrying 13 children and two adults had a blowout on its front left tire while westbound on the interstate, Trooper Russell Graham, a State Police spokesman said.

After the blowout, the van clipped a refrigerated box truck, crossed the median and flipped multiple times, coming to rest upright in the eastbound lane of traffic, Graham said.

Only the two front-seat occupants of the vehicle were wearing seat belts, Graham said. The remaining 13 people in the van were ejected. The driver of the refrigerated delivery truck was not injured.
