Swine flu claims four more La. residents
Four men died of swine flu-related illnesses last week, bringing the H1N1 death toll in Louisiana to 39, the state Department of Health and Hospitals reported Tuesday in a news release.
Thousands of doses of H1N1 vaccine have flowed into the state since October and more than 126,000 people have been vaccinated, DHH said.
Pharmacies are beginning to receive the swine flu vaccine and some schools are preparing to start H1N1 vaccination programs, according to the release.
DHH reminded parents and guardians to check swine flu informational packets sent home by schools and, if they don’t receive a packet, they should check with the school to find out whether it will be offering the program.
Those who died last week from the disease or its complications were from these DHH regions: two of the men were from Region I, which covers Jefferson, Orleans, St. Bernard and Plaquemines parishes; one man was from Region IV, which covers Acadia, Lafayette, Evangeline, St. Landry, St. Martin, Vermilion and Iberia parishes; and one man was from Region IX, which covers Livingston, St. Helena, Tangipahoa and Washington and St. Tammany parishes.
Citing federal privacy statutes, DHH will not provide any additional information on those who died.
