An Amite man died Monday after being shot by a Tangipahoa Parish sheriff’s deputy following a standoff and struggle Sunday night, the Sheriff’s Office reported.

David Johnson, 49, 26432 E. Snowcreek Road, was armed with a shotgun when he was shot in front of his home where deputies had been called in connection with a domestic case, said Dawn Panepinto, a spokeswoman for the Sheriff’s Office.

Johnson had just moved to the area, but had a criminal history that included allegations of domestic violence, Panepinto said.

The Sheriff’s Office is not releasing information on whether Johnson fired the shotgun during the altercation, Panepinto said.

She also declined to give the name of the deputy who fired the fatal shot, which she said struck Johnson in the pelvic area, or to say whether more than one shot was fired by deputies.

More information will be released after the investigation is complete, Panepinto said.

Deputies reported being called at 9 p.m. Sunday to Johnson’s residence where they found Johnson in the yard armed with a loaded, 12-gauge shotgun which he pointed at deputies, Panepinto said.

A brief standoff ensued until Johnson’s girlfriend ran from a wooded area and began struggling with Johnson over the weapon, Panepinto said.

While they were in the struggle, deputies approached and Johnson pointed the weapon at a deputy, drawing fire from at least one deputy, the Sheriff’s Office reported.

Once Johnson was wounded, deputies took his weapon and gave him first aid, according to a Sheriff’s Office news release.

Acadian Ambulance Services transported Johnson to St. Tammany Hospital for treatment where Panepinto said Johnson died Monday morning.

Sheriff Daniel Edwards said he has asked Louisiana State Police to take over the investigation of the shooting, as is customary in such cases.

Edwards said he feels his deputies followed proper procedure in handling the case.
