Ponchatoula man out on bail in fraud case
AMITE — A Hammond businessman accused of bilking more than 200 investors out of $11 million posted bail to gain his release from custody Friday, according to court and jail records.
State fraud investigators and sheriff’s deputies on Thursday arrested William Chaucer, 60, of Ponchatoula, who owned Chaucer Financial Services in Hammond, and booked him on multiple counts of fraud and trading unregistered securities.
Ad hoc Judge Jerome Winsberg on Friday morning set Chaucer’s bond for $150,000 in the 21st Judicial District Courthouse in Amite, said Brenda Bickford, secretary for District Attorney Scott Perrilloux. Chaucer posted bond later in the day, jail records show.
Chaucer is accused of using the money he collected from investors to fund a lavish lifestyle for himself and his wife, Cheryl Chaucer, according to the Louisiana Attorney General’s Office and Perrilloux.
Some of the money was spent on the Chaucers’ membership in four New Orleans Carnival krewes as well as plastic surgery and expenses related to Cheryl Chaucer’s reign as Miss Louisiana Senior America in 2008.
Attempts to reach Chaucer’s attorney were unsuccessful Friday.
