Two sentenced in 2006 slaying
Two men will serve 12 years in prison for their roles in the 2006 killing of a 47-year-old man at a Baker washateria.
Daniel Blake Thomas, 21, of Baker, and Matthew Jason Howell, 23, of Zachary, pleaded guilty this summer to manslaughter in the death of Kenneth Zumo.
State District Judge Tony Marabella sentenced both men Thursday.
A third man, Joshua W. Lindley, 23, of Baker, pleaded guilty in September to a charge of accessory to simple robbery in the Zumo case.
Marabella give Lindley a suspended five-year prison sentence at that time and put him on active supervised probation for five years.
Zumo, who lived in the same trailer park as Lindley, was beaten Feb. 10, 2006. He died 10 days later.
Thomas, Howell and Lindley were indicted in May 2006 on second-degree murder charges, accused of killing Zumo while trying to steal prescription drugs and money.
Zumo suffered a broken nose and jaw, two punctured lungs, lacerations to his face and broken ribs in the beating, authorities said.
Defense attorneys involved in the case disputed whether the beating caused the death of Zumo, who had major medical problems.
An arrest warrant said Lindley was aware that Zumo had just picked up a prescription for Xanax.
Howell told police that he, Thomas and Lindley parked across the street from the washateria where Zumo was washing his clothes, the warrant stated.
Thomas and Howell walked into the business and began talking with Zumo before Thomas allegedly punched Zumo, knocking him to the floor, the warrant added.
