BR attorney held in rape; police seek second man
A Baton Rouge attorney who years ago made an unsuccessful run for secretary of state was arrested Wednesday for allegedly raping a man earlier this week at his home.
James Michael Cutshaw, 59, is accused of raping a 22-year-old man early Monday at 2203 Sassy Lane, said Sgt. Don Kelly, a Baton Rouge Police Department spokesman.
The rape occurred after the victim was invited to Cutshaw’s home by Samuel J. Moore, who as of late Thursday remained wanted in the incident, Kelly said.
The victim told investigators he was given a drink, which he believes contained some type of incapacitating drug, and soon after drifted in and out of consciousness, Kelly reported.
“The victim stated he awoke at various times to find he had been stripped of his clothing, placed into a sexual sling apparatus, bound, gagged and raped,” Kelly said.
The victim regained full consciousness several hours later, gathered his clothes and left, Kelly said.
The man then reported the incident to police.
Police arrested Cutshaw at his home Wednesday and seized what they suspect to be illegal drugs, Kelly said. Cutshaw was booked into Parish Prison on a count of aggravated rape.
In 1987, Cutshaw ran against Fox McKeithen for Louisiana Secretary of State and almost won the election, gaining 49 percent of the vote.
In September of this year, Cutshaw was honored by The Louisiana Bar Foundation, which named him a fellow.
Cutshaw’s attorney, John Delgado, said Thursday in a prepared statement that “Mr. Cutshaw denies these spurious allegations, and looks forward to clearing his good name at trial. We are confident that he will be fully exonerated.”
Moore, who was still at-large as of late Thursday, is 25 years old, 5 feet 8 inches tall and 180 pounds, with a last known address of 1859 Stonegate Court, Kelly said.
Anyone with information about Moore’s whereabouts can contact police at (225) 389-3853 or Crime Stoppers at (225) 344-7867.
