Gonzales man gets life in killing
GONZALES — A state District Court judge sentenced an Ascension Parish man to serve a mandatory life prison sentence for his role in a drug-related slaying nearly two years ago, attorneys said Tuesday.
Arthur Nicholas III, 28, 807 S. Abe St., Gonzales, was convicted Sept. 24 at the conclusion of his non-jury trial on a charge of second-degree murder in the December 2007 fatal shooting of Mark Waddell.
Waddell, 48, 41034 Turo Lane, Gonzales, had owed Nicholas $80 for drugs provided for a weekend of partying, according to court testimony.
Judge Jane Triche-Milazzo of the 23rd Judicial District Court, who presided at Nicholas’ trial, handed down his life sentence Tuesday at the Ascension Parish Courthouse Annex in Gonzales, said First Assistant District Attorney Chuck Long, who prosecuted the case.
Nicholas must serve the sentence without the benefit of probation, parole or suspension of sentence.
Nicholas is one of five co-defendants in the slaying, two of whom testified for prosecutors against him.
Long and Raymond Gautreau, Nicholas’ defense attorney, said Triche-Milazzo appointed the Louisiana Appellate Project for Nicholas’ post-conviction appeal.]
The 23rd Judicial District is comprised of Ascension, Assumption and St. James parishes.
