GREENSBURG — A retired Louisiana educator was arrested in the middle of a St. Helena Parish School Board meeting Thursday night.

Wayne Cook, 30525 Greenwell Springs Road, Greenwell Springs, was arrested following his remarks to the St. Helena School Board on behalf of kindergarten teacher Gennie Schoen, who was up for dismissal, according to the meeting agenda.

Lt. Richard Womack of the St. Helena Parish Sheriff’s Office made the arrest after asking Cook to leave the meeting and accompany him to the hallway outside the meeting room.

After the meeting, Womack said that Cook had been arrested on a complaint that he had made harassing telephone calls.

The Sheriff’s Office later reported Cook was booked at the St. Helena Parish Jail on a warrant citing him for making a harassing telephone transmission by sending a fax.

Deputies said Cook would remain at the jail overnight awaiting bond to be set.

Schoen made public the fax that led to Cook’s arrest. It was sent Oct. 30 to the principal of St. Helena Elementary School, where Schoen was employed.

The fax referred to the principal as “an inexperienced principal that gave false information.”

Cook’s fax goes on to say, “I will bring documentation exposing this slander and incompetence to the School Board and the news media at the Nov. 12, 2009, School Board meeting.”

During Thursday night’s meeting, the board voted without discussion to dismiss Schoen on recommendation of Superintendent Daisy Slan.

Schoen also made public a document signed by Slan criticizing Schoen’s job performance.

The document accused Schoen of failing to stay for late bus duty, refusing to attend the school’s open house, refusing to remain after school hours for professional development and refusing to prepare lesson plans for kindergarten classes.

Schoen said she had been on sick leave since Sept. 14.
