A Baton Rouge Police Department Highway Interdiction Unit officer discovered about 144 pounds of marijuana with an approximate street value of $150,000 after a traffic stop at about 1:25 a.m. Thursday, a Police Department news release says. The officer stopped Katie Lynn Paredes-Barrios, 22, of Deer Park, Texas, and Ashley Ivette Ochoa, 18 of Houston, for following too closely on Interstate 12 near Millerville Road. After detecting the odor of marijuana, the officer received permission to search the vehicle and found these drugs, the news release says. Both women were arrested and booked into Parish Prison on a count each of distribution/manufacture of marijuana.

Northeast High student arrested

A 16-year-old Northeast High School student was arrested Thursday and booked into the juvenile detention center on a count of terrorizing for threatening a school shooting, according to the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office.

A teacher overheard the student’s comments on Monday and reported the incident the same day, but the student was absent from school until Thursday, Sheriff’s Office spokesman Casey Rayborn Hicks said.

The student, who had no weapon on him at the time of his arrest, will be recommended for expulsion, according to a Sheriff’s Office news release.

2 suspects sought in theft at Circle K
Deputies are looking for two men in the Nov. 4 theft of 36 cartons of cigarettes from a Circle K store, according to an East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office news release.

Two men entered the Circle K at 5310 N. Flannery Road, and while one man talked with the sales clerk, the other sneaked into the storage room, put the cartons in his pants and left the store, the news release says.

One of the robbers is described as a dark-skinned black male, approximately 5 feet 7 inches tall, with short hair, wearing a multicolored striped shirt and blue jeans at the time of the robbery, the news release says.

The second robber is described as a light-skinned black male, approximately 5 feet 5 inches tall, of medium build, wearing a white T-shirt and blue or black jogging pants at the time of the robbery, the news release says.

4 booked with DWI at EBR Parish Prison
Authorities arrested at least four people suspected of driving while intoxicated in East Baton Rouge Parish and booked them into Parish Prison between 3 p.m. Wednesday and 3 p.m. Thursday, booking records show.

Those booked and the counts against them:

  • Ricky Lee Mancuso, 26, 13726 Goodwood Blvd., second-offense DWI, reckless operation of a vehicle, improper lane usage, insurance required and driver’s license suspended/revoked.
  • Joseph Becker, 67, 40197 River Winds Court, Gonzales, first-offense DWI and possession of alcoholic beverage in vehicle.
  • Jonathan Womack, 25, 2920 Jersey Drive, Zachary, first-offense DWI, improper lane usage and possession of alcoholic beverage in vehicle.
  • Brett Newell, 41, 4723 Earl Gros Ave., first-offense DWI, hit and run, resisting an officer, flight from officer, and driver’s license suspended/revoked.
