Accused killer’s bond reduced, restored
NEW ROADS — A state judge this week reduced, then restored, the $1 million bond on a Gonzales man accused of killing his girlfriend and dumping her body underneath a bridge.
Larry J. Snyder Jr., 36, was arrested in July in the slaying of Davina Ann Chapman, 32.
Snyder was booked with second-degree murder and placed in the Pointe Coupee Parish Detention Center awaiting trial with bail set at $1 million.
On Monday, state District Judge James J. Best, of 18th Judicial District Court, reduced Snyder’s bond to $250,000, Assistant District Attorney Becky Chustz said Tuesday.
The District Attorney’s Office quickly objected to Snyder’s bond reduction because no circumstances had changed in the case to warrant the judge’s order, Chustz said.
The prosecutor said she presented Best with additional information about the case, prompting the judge to reverse himself and restore Snyder’s bail to $1 million.
Chustz said Snyder is a person of interest in another homicide investigation and also has personal contacts in foreign countries that make the accused killer a flight risk.
For those reasons, Chustz said, she plans to ask the court during a Dec. 9 hearing to order Snyder, 14099 Ceazer Road, Gonzales, held in jail without bail until his trial.
Investigators said they believe Snyder kidnapped Chapman after an argument either July 18 or in the early morning hours of July 19 outside Kelly’s Tavern, 7095 La. 105, Krotz Springs.
Chapman was reported missing July 19 to authorities in St. Landry Parish.
The next day, volunteer searchers found Chapman’s battered body in a wooded area about 30 feet below the Four-Mile Bridge on U.S. 190 connecting Livonia and Krotz Springs, investigators said.
