LSU celebrating special homecoming
LSU is celebrating its unofficial 100th year of Homecoming this week.
LSU officials trace the university’s homecoming origins back to a gathering of alumni in December 1909 prior to the 50th anniversary of LSU’s founding in 1860.
It was not until 1922 that homecoming was associated with a home football game at LSU.
In that year, LSU graduates turned out to see the Tigers defeat Tulane, 24-14.
Three years later, LSU celebrated its first official homecoming that included a pep rally and concert.
This year, the LSU Homecoming Committee has planned several activities for the week.
On Veterans Day, Wednesday, LSU homecoming will salute LSU’s veterans at noon at the Memorial Tower with a performance by the Pershing Rifles and LSU veterans as guest speakers.
The homecoming pep rally will begin at 6:50 p.m. Thursday on the Parade Ground featuring the LSU pep band and Golden Girls, head baseball coach Paul Mainieri, the LSU cheerleaders and Tiger Girls, giveaways, video displays, the presentation of the Homecoming Court, Mike the Tiger and more.
Members of the 2009 Homecoming Court include queen candidates Chantelle George, Krista Allen and Melissa Landry.
King candidates include Jim Rabalais, Ben Clark and Luke “Joe” Coussan Jr. Other members of the Homecoming Court include juniors Francis Boustany III, J. Ryan Hudson, Phoebe Hathorn and Brooksie Bonvillain, sophomores Nicholas Ferrer and Emily Landry and freshman Le’Kendra Fusilier.
LSU held its inaugural homecoming parade in 1941.
This year Mainieri will serve as the Homecoming Parade grand marshal and lead the procession as the parade rolls at noon on Saturday.
The LSU-Louisiana Tech homecoming football game has a scheduled 6 p.m. Saturday kickoff.
