Teen pleads innocent in killings

A Baton Rouge teenager accused of shooting a woman and her son with an assault rifle pleaded innocent Monday to two counts of second-degree murder.
State District Judge Trudy White appointed the local Public Defender’s Office to represent 17-year-old Derrick George Gordy in the Sept. 30 shooting deaths of Patricia Aldridge, 40, and Ronald Thacker Jr., 21.
Jay Winters, 28, of Baton Rouge, who allegedly provided Gordy with the AK-47 used in the incident, also pleaded innocent Monday to the second-degree murder charges.
White likewise appointed the Public Defender’s Office to represent Winters.
A second Baton Rouge teen charged in the case, 15-year-old Demario Alexander, will be arraigned in December on the same charges. Alexander turns 16 Thursday.
Winters and Gordy, who was 16 at the time of the killings, are due back in court in February.
Winters, Gordy and Alexander are being held in Parish Prison.
Aldridge and Thacker were shot in front of Aldridge’s South Sunderland Avenue home Sept. 30. An East Baton Rouge Parish grand jury indicted Winters, Gordy and Alexander last month.
Gordy is believed to have fired the fatal shots, sheriff’s officials have said.
Winters is accused of supplying Gordy with the AK-47 and then driving Gordy and Alexander away from the shooting scene.
Aldridge was on the phone with a 911 dispatcher when she and her son were shot. She placed the call after she was told that a teenage boy carrying an AK-47 was near her home, an affidavit of probable cause states.
Moments later, Aldridge and her son had a “brief altercation’’ with the boy and another teenager, according to the affidavit. The mother and son were then shot.
Under Louisiana law, a second-degree murder conviction carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison.
