Prairieville man dies in camper fire
PRAIRIEVILLE — A man died in an accidental fire that occurred sometime before 2 a.m. Saturday in his fifth-wheel camper, according to the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
Michael J. Miller, 63, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Ascension Parish Coroner’s Office, the Fire Marshal’s Office said in a written statement.
Investigators have no official cause of the fire in the 35-foot, fifth-wheel recreational camper that was permanently set up at 44299 Erwin Villar Jr. Road, but think that it was accidental and likely related to electrical or heating units, fire officials said.
When firefighters with the Galvez-Lake Volunteer Fire Department, Seventh District Volunteer Fire Department and St. Amant Volunteer Fire Department arrived, the fire had already consumed the camper and threatened a nearby residence, fire officials said. The camper had no working smoke detector, fire officials said.
“Firefighters gave their all to make a difference. Unfortunately, this death occurred well before their arrival as this fire was burning, undetected, for a long time,” State Fire Marshal Butch Browning said in the statement.
