Blanco still has pull
More money for schools
Gov. Kathleen Blanco wants to commit the following extra funding to annual education spending: $158 million for teacher pay raises (at least $2,400 per teacher).
$155 million in new operating funds for public schools.
$33 million in school staff raises ($750 increase per support employee).
$30 million to expand the pre-kindergarten “LA 4” program.
$16 million to revamp public high schools. $115 million to fully fund the higher education formula.
$33 million for increased costs such as insurance and retirement.
$30 million for a 5 percent average faculty pay raise
$15 million more in aid for poorer students.
$10 million to help hurricane-affected campuses find and keep faculty.
