High-speed chase ends in man’s arrest
AMITE — Deputies arrested an Amite man Wednesday accused of trying to kill a deputy while leading authorities on a high-speed chase from his residence in Amite to Lacombe, deputies reported Thursday.
Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Deputy Wesley Corkern attempted to serve a warrant on Derrill Naquin, 36, 16378 Friendship Church Road, Amite, at his home when Naquin fled from the deputy, Tangipahoa and St. Tammany sheriff’s offices said in written statements.
The following is an account of their pursuit of Naquin based on statements issued by the agencies.
When Naquin got in his car, the deputy broke a window and attempted to kill the ignition. Instead, Naquin drove off with the deputy partially inside.
Once the deputy got out of the moving car, he commanded Naquin to stop.
Naquin then drove onto Interstate 12, where St. Tammany Parish deputies and State Police were waiting to join the pursuit. Naquin maneuvered around spike strips laid out for him but hit one around the Lacombe exit.
After Naquin stopped, deputies found that he had stabbed himself with a kitchen knife.
Naquin was booked into the St. Tammany Parish Jail with attempted first-degree murder of a police officer and flight from an officer.
Naquin, who was being held without bond, will be transferred to the Tangipahoa Parish Jail for further processing, deputies said.
