ZACHARY — Police arrested a 24-year-old Wilson man Tuesday night accused of using his cell phone camera to surreptitiously take more than 500 video and still images under the dresses and skirts of unsuspecting women, Police Chief John Herty said.

Herty said Brian Burleigh, 7121 Carruth Road, Wilson, told detectives he has an addiction to voyeurism and “desperately needs help.”

Burleigh is a technical support specialist in the state legislative auditor’s Information Services Division.

Jenifer Schaye, general counsel for the Legislative Auditor’s Office, said Wednesday that Burleigh has been placed on administrative leave.

Zachary police booked him into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on Wednesday on 503 counts of video voyeurism after investigating a complaint by a woman that Burleigh was taking photographs under her skirt while she shopped at a Zachary store Tuesday night, the police chief said.

When the woman confronted Burleigh, he walked out of the store with the woman following him until she encountered an off-duty East Baton Rouge Parish sheriff’s deputy, Herty said.

Burleigh tried to escape in his car from the deputy, who began following him, but the officer managed to detain him until Zachary police arrived, the police chief said.

The suspect was cooperative during the Tuesday night investigation and agreed to allow police to search his home, Herty said.

A Zachary detective reviewed the images stored in the memory of Burleigh’s cell phone, finding 470 videos and 43 still-photo images. Herty said.

The memory card also contained some images of women “at work performing normal office duties,” Herty said.

Police seized Burleigh’s personal computer from his home, along with a variety of computer storage devices, but they had not reviewed them for additional incriminating evidence as of Wednesday afternoon, Detective Capt. David McDavid said.

Schaye declined to say whether the Legislative Auditor’s staff has examined computers Burleigh may have used at his office.

“We’re aware of the arrest, and we’re in the process of dealing with it as a personnel matter,” Schaye said.
