Man pleads no contest to hit-run fatality
AMITE — A man pleaded no contest Wednesday in 21st Judicial District Court to striking and killing a woman pedestrian and injuring her two young children in October 2008.
Andrew A. Hollie, 26, 19330 Sisters Road, Ponchatoula, entered a plea of no contest to one count of negligent homicide, two counts of negligent injuring, one count of hit-and-run driving and one count of careless operation of a vehicle.
Hollie was accused of hitting Lizzie Hart, 31, of Ponchatoula, and her two children while they walked down the Interstate 12 Service Road at 5:15 p.m. Oct. 15, 2008, Tangipahoa Parish sheriff’s deputies said at the time.
The children quickly recovered, but Hart died a week later from her injuries, deputies said.
Hollie tearfully told the judge in court Wednesday that he was headed toward a friend’s house when he drove over a curve in the road and hit the woman. According to Black’s Law Dictionary, by entering a no-contest plea, a defendant does not admit guilt, but will not dispute the charge.
A guilty plea, however, can be used against a defendant in a future civil lawsuit.
State District Judge Ernest Drake set sentencing of Hollie Nov. 30.
