VILLE PLATTE — Superintendent Toni Hamlin gave the Evangeline Parish School Board good news Wednesday about performance scores on spring ILEAP and LEAP testing.

The districtwide performance score showed a 7.5 percent improvement — 88.4 in 2009 as compared to 80.9 in 2008.

Hamlin said the scores are based on test scores as well as graduation, dropout rates and school-attendance figures.

In the breakdown of schools, three earned three stars: Basile High School, James Stephens Montessori and W.W. Stewart Elementary; six earned two stars: Bayou Chicot Elementary, Chataignier Elementary, Mamou Elementary, Mamou High School, Pine Prairie High School, Vidrine Elementary and Ville Platte Elementary School.

Ville Platte High School received a one-star ranking, an improvement after being classified last year as “academically unacceptable.”

“This is a real testimony to the hard work of our teachers and staff. I feel we are headed in the right direction. We are making substantial progress,” Hamlin said.

In other business, the board approved dropping monthly re-organizational cost reports.

Business Manager Amy LaFleur said there have been no new expenses in the past year connected to the reorganization of schools. She added the school district has so far spent $4.4 million.

In other action, LaFleur announced that bonus checks will be distributed to personnel in November based on excess sales tax collections.
