South Harrell’s Ferry work set to start
Work will begin in November on widening South Harrell’s Ferry Road from South Sherwood Forest Boulevard to Millerville Road, marking the start of construction of the 20th road project in the city-parish’s Green Light Plan, a news release says.
South Harrell’s Ferry Road is a two-lane road and the widening will expand that into four lanes, Green Light Plan spokesman John Snow said in the news release.
Snow said work will not start until November because Green Light Plan officials are waiting on a few final items needed before construction can start.
Besides adding the two lanes, the project work includes creating sidewalks and a raised median.
The project also will include the creation of two bridges crossing Jones Creek, one eastbound lane bridge and one westbound lane bridge, Snow said in the news release.
The cost of the project is $13.2 million and the anticipated completion date is August 2011.
The Green Light Plan is a massive street and road improvements program funded by a half-cent sales tax approved by East Baton Rouge Parish voters in 2005.
Mayor-President Kip Holden will speak on Thursday at a 10 a.m. groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the start of construction. The ceremony will be held near Printing Tech at 11930 S. Harrell’s Ferry Road.
