4 arrested in theft of car with children
Authorities have arrested four people from St. Landry Parish following an Oct. 12 robbery in the Opelousas area.
The victim, Shane Brown, told authorities he had been beaten and robbed of both his money and his vehicle, which still carried his two young children, ages 6 and 7, Sheriff Bobby Guidroz said Friday.
The robbery occurred on Napp Lane at 10 p.m.
Guidroz said deputies immediately began searching for the vehicle, which was located within 45 minutes about 3 to 4 miles away on La. 357.
Guidroz said one of the suspects had abandoned the vehicle with the children still inside. The children left the car and walked to the nearest home. The homeowner, Carrol A. Tweedel, called authorities.
The investigation revealed that Brown was asked by Shalonda Rae Robinson, 27, of Opelousas, to meet her at the Napp Lane location. When Brown arrived, Robinson lured him out of the vehicle.
Once outside, Daniel Scott Taylor, 20, of Church Point and Michael Maurice White, 18, of Opelousas, rushed out of the woods and allegedly began beating him, according to a news release.
Authorities said Ashley Rene Robert, 22, of Opelousas, then climbed into Brown’s vehicle and drove away with Brown’s children secured in the back seat.
Robinson then drove away in a separate vehicle, while Taylor and White remained at the scene and allegedly continued to beat Brown before finally robbing him of his wallet and then fleeing, the release stated.
“It was a planned robbery by the four individuals,” Guidroz said.
On Wednesday, authorities arrested Robinson, Robert and Taylor on one count each of simple battery, simple robbery, simple kidnapping and carjacking. White turned himself in Thursday and was booked into the St. Landry Parish Jail on the same charges.
Brown suffered moderate injuries in the attack and his children were not injured, Guidroz said.
