While short of the state's goal, public school students showed their biggest gain in four years on the annual snapshot of student performance.

"No matter how you slice this data this data looks good," state Superintendent of Education Paul Pastorek told reporters.

The results are called school performance scores. They show how students fared on key tests as well as attendance and graduation rates.

The score this year is 91, up from 86.3 last year and one of the biggest gains in the decade that Louisiana has been issuing the school evaluations.

The state's original 10-year goal was 100 by this year. Even that score means that 25 percent of students are performing below grade level.

The Zachary Community School District retained the top spot in the state with a score of 116.8. The West Feliciana Parish School District was second in the state with a score of 110.9; Ascension Parish public schools were fourth at 105.9 and the Central Community School District was fifth statewide at 105.8.

The East Baton Rouge Parish School District has a score of 79.8, up from 74.1 last year.

Lizabeth Frischhertz, chief officer for accountability, assessment and evaluation for EBR, noted that 75 percent of district schools showed gains this year.

Frischhertz also said Baton Rouge public schools closed the gap between their school peformance score and the state average.

The top figure a school can achieve is between 180 and 200, said Scott Norton, assistant state superintendent.
