PLAQUEMINE — An Iberville Parish jury on Friday convicted a man of raping 9- and 11-year old girls while relatives of both children slept in a nearby bedroom.

Special prosecutor Tony Clayton of the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office told the jury that defendant Kirk Mosby, 44, is a monster who carried out every parent’s worst nightmare.

Defense attorney Jerry D’Aquila asked jurors to set aside emotion and come to a verdict based on the law and the evidence, or lack of evidence, presented during the trial.

After the trial’s opening statements, both victims, now teenagers, took turns on the witness stand.

The girls, neighbors living in White Castle at the time of the 2002 attacks, testified that Mosby carried them from a bed they were sharing during an overnight sleepover into an empty bedroom.

The girls testified that Mosby, 22765 Kuneman Road, Plaquemine, raped them one at a time as the other girl lay in the bed.

Both girls also pointed to Mosby as their attacker when prompted by Clayton.

The jury, composed of 11 women and three men, voted unanimously to convict Mosby on two counts of aggravated rape. Mosby’s conviction carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison under Louisiana law.

After the trial, Brett Stassi, an investigator with 18th Judicial District Attorney Ricky Ward’s office, said Mosby would be sentenced by state District Judge William Dupont in November.

The 18th Judicial District is comprised of West Baton Rouge, Iberville and Pointe Coupee parishes.
