Pointe Coupee starts early Oct. 17 vote

NEW ROADS — Pointe Coupee Parish voters wishing to get a head start on voting in the Oct. 17 elections can start balloting today.

The Registrar of Voters Office, on the second floor of the parish courthouse, 211 E. Main St., New Roads, will be open from 8:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. to allow voters to pick a new parish assessor and vote on a number of tax proposals.

On the ballot are three candidates, all Democrats, running for assessor. They are: Larry S. Bossier, James A. “Jimmy” Laurent Jr. and John “Sassy” Pourciau.

Also facing voters is a proposed 10-year, parishwide 4.03-mill property tax renewal to maintain and support the Pointe Coupee Parish library and its branches.

If approved, the tax would generate $1.27 million per year.

The Registrar of Voters also lists the following proposals on the ballot.

  • A 10-year, 2.99-mill property tax to maintain and operate facilities in Fire Protection District No. 1 in the northern end of the parish to produce an estimated $57,245 per year.
  • A 10-year, 3.69-mill property tax renewal to maintain and operate facilities in Fire Protection District No. 2 in the Morganza and Fordoche areas that, if approved, would bring in an estimated $74,106 annually.
  • A 10-year, 1.31-mill property tax renewal to fund equipment and maintenance in Fire Protection District No. 2. The millage would generate an estimated $26,309 annually.
  • A 10-year, 2.97-mill property tax renewal for maintaining and operating facilities in Fire Protection District No. 3 in the Oscar and Parlange areas. The tax would bring in about $161,164 per year.
  • A 10-year, 3-mill property tax renewal to fund equipment and maintenance for Fire Protection District No. 3 in the Oscar and Parlange areas. The tax would raise about $162,792 per year.
  • A 10-year, 10.91-mill property tax renewal for maintenance and operations in Fire Protection District No. 4 in the Livonia, Lottie and Fordoche areas. The proposition would generate an estimated $415,606 per year.
  • A 10-year, 5-mill property tax renewal for maintaining and operating facilities in Fire District No. 5 in the New Roads and Ventress areas. The millage would raise an estimated $911,990 per year.
