Rayne man indicted; officers cleared
An Acadia Parish grand jury indicted a 35-year-old Rayne man Thursday on a charge of attempted first-degree murder and ruled officers were justified in shooting him during a February incident in Rayne.
The Feb. 10 shooting left Anthony Campbell suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.
District Attorney Mike Harson said grand jurors returned a no true bill on the unnamed officers.
The shooting involved both Rayne police officers and Acadia Parish sheriff’s deputies. It occurred at Campbell’s home at West C Street and Malvern Avenue.
Campbell allegedly struck one sheriff’s deputy with his vehicle while attempting to flee from authorities, who had arrived to execute a search warrant at his home.
Authorities opened fire on Campbell and from 20 to 25 shots were fired, Harson said. One bullet struck Campbell in the head and remains lodged there.
A number of other bullets struck his vehicle, Harson said.
Louisiana State Police detectives investigated the officer-involved shooting, which is customary.
It remains unclear who fired the shot that struck Campbell because the bullet cannot be removed. Harson said grand jurors found the shooting justified under the circumstances.
Investigators also allegedly found an undetermined amount of substances believed to be narcotics and what was described as a large amount of narcotics inside the vehicle.
Attorney Jeffery F. Speer is representing Campbell and his family in a civil lawsuit over the shooting.
Speer wrote in a recent e-mail that Campbell denies the allegations against him.
Speer could not be reached for comment late Thursday.
