ABBEVILLE — The Vermilion Parish Police Jury voted Monday to give Acadian Building Components LLC 60 days to clean up debris from a demolished building left just outside the city limits of Kaplan.

The debris originally was inside the city limits, but the company moved the debris to property it owns on the parish side after the city moved to have the company clear the site in the city, Parish Attorney Paul Moresi said after Monday’s meeting.

Moresi said during the meeting he received a letter from a Monroe law firm on behalf of the company saying the remnants of the destroyed building are not debris but salvage inventory being prepared for sale.

Juror Cloris Boudreaux, of Kaplan, disagreed, saying the building was “torn down with an excavator and the wood was thrown everywhere.”

Juror Ronald “Dago” Menard, also of Kaplan, then moved the business be given 60 days to clean up the site.

“If a storm comes through, there will be debris flying everywhere,” he said.

Moresi said the jury would have to decide at a later date about any fines or sanctions should the site not be cleaned within the 60 days.

In another matter Monday, the jury authorized Secretary/Treasurer Chris Theriot to sign a $1 million line of credit in the event of an accident at the parish landfill.

Theriot said the line of credit is a surety bond required by state law to be renewed every year for the operation of the parish landfill.

The line of credit cost the parish $1,000 and a charge of 2 percent above the CD rate through First Guaranty Bank.

“It is necessary to do this every year,” Theriot said. “It protects the parish if anything ever goes wrong at the landfill.”
