Vermilion board OKs schools’ flood walls
ABBEVILLE — The Vermilion Parish School Board authorized Superintendent Randy Schexnayder on Thursday night to sign an agreement with the Vermilion Parish Police Jury to submit a grant to build flood protection walls around Erath Middle and Erath High schools.
District Maintenance Supervisor Jerome Puyau said the project will cost about $2.66 million with 75 percent — just under $2 million — being paid through the state Hazard Mitigation Grant Program.
“There is no timeline yet on the project,” he said.
“We are still in the early preliminary phases of planning and we are just getting started with gaining approval to start the process.”
Puyau said the process is necessary to protect the schools from storm surge events related to hurricanes.
The project would likely entail building walls around the schools up to flood elevation protection levels, which is about 4.5 feet.
Both schools were damaged from flooding in the wake of hurricanes Rita in 2005 and Ike in 2008, prompting the action by the board after months of students attending classes in portable buildings while facilities were repaired.
