LABADIEVILLE — Deputies arrested a couple in an investigation of eight horses found so malnourished their ribs were showing and they had lost muscle in their backs and hips, the Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office reported Wednesday.

Anthony “Tony” Berthelot, 61, and Celeste Cook, 44, both of 126 Green Acres Court, Labadieville, who are the owners or caretakers of the animals at their home, were booked into Assumption Parish Detention Center on Tuesday on single counts of animal cruelty, deputies said in a statement.

Before the arrests, deputies asked a veterinarian to look at the horses, which were living in a fenced-in area, and confirmed they were undernourished.

Deputies said they had received a complaint Monday about the condition of the animals.

Deputies said because the veterinarian told them the horses needed better nutrition immediately, the animals were placed with other caretakers.

The caretakers were relocating the horses to facilities in Thibodaux and Bayou L’Ourse.
