Sherwood Middle Academic Magnet School and St. James Episcopal Day School, both in Baton Rouge, were named Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence this morning by the U.S. Department of Education, two of seven in the state of Louisiana.

In the greater Baton Rouge area, French Settlement Elementary School in French Settlement earned this distinction. In Lafayette, L.J. Alleman Middle School was likewise named a Blue Ribbon school.

These schools either rank in the top 10 percent on nationally normed standardized tests, or at least 40 percent of their students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds and improve significantly academically.

Sherwood Middle is the eighth school in East Baton Rouge Parish school system history to earn a Blue Ribbon and one of six in the past six years.

In the nation, 314 schools were named a Blue Ribbon school.
