West Feliciana students to be moved
TUNICA — Students who attend Tunica Elementary School will be bused Monday to two other West Feliciana Parish schools away from the area where authorities are looking for an escaped Louisiana State Penitentiary inmate, school officials said today.
School Superintendent Jesse L. Perkins Jr. said first-grade, kindergarten and prekindergarten students will be bused from their homes to Bains Lower Elementary School, and Tunica students in grades two through five will be transported to Bains Elementary School.
Teachers and teacher aides will report to the school where their students are sent, and other Tunica Elementary employees will report to the principal for job assignments.
“Tunica Elementary will remain closed until we are advised by law enforcement that it is safe to resume classes at that school,” Perkins said in a statement that also was transmitted to homes in the area by the West Feliciana Parish Sheriff’s Office’s emergency notification system.
Perkins said if inmate Henry Smith is caught before 5 a.m. Monday, notification of any change in plans will be made by the emergency “all call” system.
Smith, 44, escaped from the prison Thursday morning and remains at large.
