Grant will fund LSU hurricane studies
A $130,000 grant from the Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Consortium is funding two LSU studies looking into improving effectiveness of communication during hurricanes.
Led by Renee Edwards, professor and chair of LSU’s Department of Communication Studies, they hope to create “more effective hurricane communication among forecasters, government officials, media representatives and ultimately the public,” according to a news release.
One study will involve interviewing experts from southeastern Louisiana on how decision-makers manage communication about a crisis.
The result will be the formation of recommendations on how to better communicate risks to coastal communities, particularly those on parishes east of the Mississippi River.
The other study will include a telephone survey of coastal residents about their knowledge of hurricanes, and why some people decide to evacuate while others decide not to evacuate.
